Description:
Greninja, easily the best starter in competitive history bar Speed Boost Blaziken which is locked away in Ubers. There are many reasons that this Pokemon succeeds. It has good offensive stats, a fantastic speed stat and a marvelous ability in Protean, which changes Greninja's type to whatever move it's using, allowing Greninja to attain STAB on effectively every move. Protean can also be abused with Non-Offensive moves as well. Greninja also has a fully loaded movepool, complete with multiple offensive moves on both ends of the spectrum and access to both Spikes. However not all is good for Greninja, due to his low defenses and lack of bulk in general, he's complete Talonflame bait. His physical attack stat is also somewhat disappointing and makes it hard to utilize his Physical movepool at times.
Set #1: Life Orb Special
Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump / Surf
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Extrasensory / Grass Knot / HP Electric / HP Fire / HP Ground
Set Description:
Pretty much just a typical Life Orb set, but thanks to Protean, your type switches to the type you're attacking with, effectively giving you STAB. Hydro Pump, Ice Beam and Dark Pulse are all good attacking choices and you will mainly use those three. You could use Surf if you're worried about Hydro Pump's shaky accuracy. The last slot is completely based on the STAB coverage you need. Extrasensory and Grass Knot are both niche choices, but I tend to go with a Hidden Power. Hidden Power Electric (what I usually use) gives you a STAB minor BoltBeam combo. Hidden Power Fire allows you to maim things like Ferrothorn, and Hidden Power Ground allows you to nail particular threats and escape a possible life threatening Electric move thanks to Protean changing you to Ground type.
Set #2: Life Orb Physical
Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Waterfall / Water Shuriken
- Night Slash
- U-Turn
- Power-Up Punch / Rock Tomb
Set Description:
Same concept as the Special Life Orb set, but with Physical moves instead. Waterfall and Night Slash are your two main attacking moves. You could sub out Waterfall for Greninja's Signature Move Water Shuriken, which is basically the Water type version of Bullet Seed but with Priority as well. U-Turn gets STAB and is especially useful thanks to Greninja's fantastic speed. The last slot is mostly for niche options, but there are two that stand out. Power-Up Punch gets STAB and increases Greninja's attack every time you use it. On the other hand, Rock Tomb got a BP increase to 60, and thanks to it getting STAB and with the abundance of Talonflame around, this can be very useful. The 100% speed drop is also a lovely add-on to Rock Tomb as well.
Other Options:
Spikes and Toxic Spikes can be abused, Spikes in particular because Protean will turn Greninja Ground Type, allowing you to avoid a potentially deadly Electric move and continue to set up, then damage the opponent. There are multiple other niche offensive moves in Greninja's movepool like STAB Shadow Sneak thanks to Protean that can be used to get a nasty surprise on Pokemon like Aegislash or Prankster Mega Banette.
