Description:
It says a lot about a Pokemon when said Pokemon is better than its evolution. While Wailord has its niche in Choice Scarf Water Spouts, Wailmer takes on a completely different role thanks to its massive 130 base HP stat, and decent defenses with help from Eviolite. Along with this, Wailmer has access to multiple niche support moves to help it tank, such as Aqua Ring to give it Leftovers recovery. Wailmer also has usable base 70 offenses, which allows for some surprising turns due to his increasingly surprising movepool. However not all is good for our whale friend, as he'll have a whale of a time dealing with strong Special Attackers. However, if you can properly use Wailmer, you'll be surprised as to just how much he can do.
Set #1: Curse
Wailmer @ Eviolite
Ability: Water Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Bounce / Rest
Set Description:
A simple Curse set, made possible due to Wailmer's titanic HP stat and decent defenses thanks to Eviolite. Simply boost with Curse then fire away with STAB Waterfall. Earthquake is another strong move perfect for getting a surprise drop on Electric types that would come to ruin your day. The last slot is up to preference, Bounce is for dealing with pesky Grass types that resist both of your other attacks and it has a nifty paralysis chance, or you could use Rest to get rid of status and restore HP. However thanks to Wailmer's ability Water Veil making it immune to Burns, it won't have to worry about being status'd much.
Set #2: Whale, Whale, Whale.
Wailmer @ Eviolite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 126 Def / 4 SpA / 126 SpD
Modest Nature
- Aqua Ring
- Clear Smog
- Rest
- Toxic / Icy Wind
Set Description:
My absolute favorite set to use with Wailmer. Simply set up Aqua Ring, Rest when needed, use Clear Smog to slightly damage along with getting rid of an opponent's boosts. Toxic is used as another way to damage your opponent. Keep in mind though that Steel types cannot be hit by this set unless you run Icy Wind, which is a niche option that also reduces the opponent's speed.
Other Options:
Wailmer has several other niche support options, such as Soak which could possible have some use on the Curse set. Scald, Hyper Voice, Bulldoze and Ice Beam are all other valid attacks that could fit onto a set somewhere, unfortunately Wailmer tends to use other moves better.
