Description:
My favorite Mega evolution hands down both aesthetically and competitively, people don't realize just how much Absol improved with his Mega evolution, especially in Generation Six which I like to nickname the Generation of Darkness. For starters, his already gargantuan 130 Attack stat has jumped up to an insane 150 Attack. But that's not why it's gotten so good, in fact that's one of the minor reasons that Mega Absol is so amazing. Mega Absol now has a Special Attack and Speed of 115, allowing it vast amounts of unpredictability and the ability to use a whole arsenal of moves that it wasn't able to use before due to the lackluster nature of those stats previously. It has an offensive movepool on both sides of the spectrum that would make most normal types jealous (due to their tendency to have many moves of all types), and it has a support movepool that has Blissey eating its heart out. If that wasn't enough, Absol also got access to Magic Bounce, which means that it can block hazards, status conditions and anything of the sort and simply bounce them back at the opponent. To top it off, due to the buff to Knock Off and Dark type moves in general, Absol isn't walled by Steel types anymore. The only problem is that Absol's defenses are still lackluster. Luckily though, Mega Absol has more than enough fantastic options that it will never disappoint you.
Set #1: Swords Dance
Absol @ Absolite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Play Rough
- Iron Tail / Stone Edge / Sucker Punch
Set Description:
This thing is an absolute nightmare. Use Swords Dance then proceed to sweep. Knock Off is your STAB of choice and will maim anything along with getting rid of its item. Play Rough is for all of those Dark, Fighting and Dragon types that would like to come in and attempt to ruin your day. The last slot is dedicated to a coverage move of your choice. Iron Tail is fantastic for nailing Faeries and anything that Dark / Fairy coverage can't nail in general, Stone Edge is also a good coverage option. Sucker Punch is another Dark STAB but it's priority and it can work quite well on Mega Absol.
Set #2: Calm Mind
Absol @ Absolite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Dark Pulse
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
Set Description:
Boost with Calm Mind, then fire off STAB Dark Pulses to possibly flinch your opponent. Unlike the Physical set, this set runs off the inferior Special Attack stat. While this may seem detrimental there are multiple advantages, such as Mega Absol getting a Special Defense boost as well, along with being able to hit multiple Pokemon it wouldn't have been able to touch on the Physical side. To top it all off, it gets access to BoltBeam coverage to nail the majority of OU for super effective damage in combination with its STAB move.
Set #3: Hone Claws
Absol @ Absolite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hone Claws
- Play Rough
- Iron Tail
- Stone Edge / Knock Off
Set Description:
This set is unexpected and arguably outclassed by the Swords Dance set, but it can be a nasty surprise nonetheless. It has three moves in its arsenal that are high on power and low on accuracy, Play Rough, Iron Tail and Stone Edge. Simply boost with Hone Claws and fire off one of these attacks. If not having a STAB is detrimental to you, you could always swap out Stone Edge for Knock Off. Stone Edge however will allow you to nail Talonflame.
Set #4: Baton Pass
Absol @ Absolite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Baton Pass
- Swords Dance
- Calm Mind
- Knock Off
Set Description:
What a lot of people don't know is that Mega Absol is easily one of the best Baton Passers in the game due to its high speed, access to both Swords Dance and Calm Mind, and Magic Bounce preventing a Pokemon from statusing it. Knock Off is simply there to have STAB that can simultaneously destroy an opponent's item.
Set #5: The Anti-Darkness
Absol @ Absolite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
- Knock Off
Set Description:
This set can be an absolute nightmare if you play your cards right. Having access to both Thunder Wave and Will-O-Wisp in tandem with Magic Bounce is a terrible handicap... for your opponent. Taunt is always a great option due to Absol's fantastic speed. Knock Off is again here for that hindering item destroying STAB.
Other Options:
Absol has a load of other offensive movepool options, such as Bounce, Flamethrower, Psycho Cut, Megahorn, Superpower, Shadow Ball, Night Slash and Foul Play, but most of these moves are outclassed. In terms of a Support movepool, you could be edgy and run Curse Mega Absol, but more often than not you're gonna wanna keep your fantastic speed. Me First is a nifty option that can net you some very nice surprise KOs, especially against Dragon types who love to spam Draco Meteor. Wish and Torment are other support options that could have their uses, but overall you're better off using one of the moves listed in the sets.
