For those of you who don't know, in the US a person can be charged with a "hate crime." A hate crime by definition is a crime in which people assault, or kill people based on their race / creed / religion. However, I only see the crime slapped on white people who attack or kill black people. This brings up a very important question.
Why does the "hate crime" law exist in the first place, and even if it HAS to exist, why isn't it being enforced for everyone?
The fact that the law even exists in the first place is promoting racism in my opinion. It's basically saying that "killing one color of people is more heinous than killing another color of people." If a white person kills a black person, they should be charged with murder. If a black person kills a white person, they should be charged with murder. For murders based on race, there's always aggravated charges to be slapped on. The extra motive would help cement the case too.
The point I'm trying to get to is, why is the law still condoning racism. The only thing I can think of is that hate crime related charges generate huge press, and therefore generate serious money.
What do you guys think? Should hate crimes be abolished so people can be tried equally?
