Description:
One of my favorite Megas, this Mega has almost assured the continued success of the vastly underrated Hail weather. Weather in general took a hit when all weather starting abilities were limited to five turns, but this won't stop teams from being used. Thanks to Abomasnow's Mega Form, he is now the most powerful weather starter below the Ubers line, arguably better than Tyranitar for a multitude of reasons; Wider movepool, arguably better typing defensively (both have a ton of weaknesses but Grass / Ice has better resistances and a few neutral things that Tyranitar wishes it had), and a better stat spread allowing it to take on a multitude of roles more effectively. Never underestimate Abomasnow, it will be your last mistake.
Set #1: Special Attacker
Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Blizzard
- Giga Drain
- Focus Blast
- Protect / Frost Breath / Substitute
Set Description:
This is my favorite set to run with Abomasnow and easily one of the most practical. One of the advantages of Hail weather is a 100% accurate Blizzard, which Abomasnow can abuse maliciously thanks to its highly boosted Special Attack along with STAB. Giga Drain is another STAB move that also restores Abomasnow's health. Focus Blast is mostly for coverage and can maim so many things that would otherwise annoy it. The last slot is mainly preference. Protect is useful for scouting and annoying users of Hi-Jump Kick. Frost Breath allows Abomasnow to break right through Pokemon that have set up massive defenses and it gets STAB. Substitute is also usable since Abomasnow has a STAB Giga Drain.
Set #2: Physical Attacker
Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Wood Hammer / Seed Bomb
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch / Ice Shard
- Protect / Ice Shard / Brick Break / Swords Dance
Set Description:
Same concept as the Special set, but in my opinion it's slightly inferior. Wood Hammer is a fantastic STAB move, but if the recoil is unsightly you could run Seed Bomb as a STAB instead. Earthquake will maim many things and Ice Punch is another designated STAB move. Protect is again a choice for scouting and giving a giant middle finger to Hi-Jump Kick users. Ice Shard is an option for STAB priority, although you could instead just run Ice Shard instead of Ice Punch, and Brick Break is an option to deal with certain Pokemon such as Tyranitar better than the Special set. Abomasnow also gets access to Swords Dance which can be extremely useful if you want to risk boosting.
Set #3: Ingrain Tank
Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 126 Def / 4 SpA / 126 SpD
Modest Nature
- Ingrain
- Substitute
- Blizzard / Ice Beam / Frost Breath
- Giga Drain / Leech Seed
Set Description:
This set is weird, but if you pull it off it will be an absolute nightmare to your opponent. All you need to do is set up Ingrain, Sub up and then let a mix of your Hail and attacks take care of the rest. Blizzard takes advantage of the hail, but if you plan on stalling for a long period of time Ice Beam might be a better option. If even that seems unappealing due to a Pokemon coming in to attempt to set up on Abomasnow, Frost Breath will allow you to ignore their boosts and always critical hit. The last slot you could either use Giga Drain for more recovery or Leech Seed to help outstall an opponent. This is an evil set if you manage to pull it off.
Other Options:
Abomasnow can run a mixed set quite well, however it'll be hard to fit all the moves you would ideally want into four moveslots and thus sets can get awkward. The even offenses and defenses definitely help though. Hidden Power was nerfed, so HP Fire isn't as ideal for help as it used to be. Abomasnow on the Physical side also gets Rock Slide (for possible EdgeQuake coverage), Iron Tail (for Faeries), and a couple other niche options but most of them aren't worth checking out. On the Special Side, Abomasnow's only other notable options include Energy Ball, Grass Knot and Shadow Ball. All of them are outclassed, especially the two Grass Moves. In terms of the rest of its support movepool, you could run a pure Subseed set although it's outclassed by its own Ingrain set. Role Play could have a niche if you're stalling using Abomasnow, Synthesis can also be a usable option if Hail has run out as well and extra recovery is really needed..
