Description:
Generation Six has so far given some Pokemon some gnarly upgrades and have introduced some Pokemon that kick major tail with their new abilities. So the question is, with Greninja dominating up in OU, is it fair to say that Frogadier can do the same in NU? Luckily the answer is yes. While Frogadier may not have the same chops, stats and even movepool to an extent as his evolution, he has more than enough to succeed in the depths of NU. Why you might ask? Three major reasons, Protean, Protean and Protean. Protean switches Frogadier's typing, effectively giving him STAB on every single move in his arsenal. On top of this, this applies to Hidden Power as well. To add even more icing on the cake, Frogadier has a base speed stat of 97, which is blistering in NU. Not all is good for our mini ninja frog however, as his support movepool is almost barren bar Toxic Spikes and Taunt, meaning he will always been in an offensive role. Along with this, his Attack stat isn't as high as his Special Attack, making it a bit harder to use his Physical movepool which dwarfs his Special movepool. If you can look past these flaws however, you'll find that Frogadier can be an absolutely daunting attacker.
Set #1: Life Orb Special
Frogadier @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump / Surf
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Grass Knot / HP Electric / HP Fire / HP Ground
Set Description:
Literally the exact same set that I put in my Greninja analysis can be put here, with the exception of Extrasensory as Frogadier doesn't get that. Simply attack and get STAB with whichever attack you decide to use. You get fantastic coverage thanks to the boosted Hidden Powers. Hydro Pump / Surf depending on Power vs Accuracy. Ice Beam and Dark Pulse are two additional great moves.
Set #2: Life Orb Physical
Frogadier @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Waterfall
- Rock Slide
- U-Turn / Quick Attack
- Power-Up Punch
Set Description:
Once again similar to the Physical Greninja set however this one has major changes. Frogadier doesn't get access to either Water Shuriken or Night Slash, so running this set is slightly more difficult. Waterfall and Rock Slide are your two main damaging moves. U-Turn is an option to keep up momentum, or you could just use Quick Attack for STAB priority. Power-Up Punch allows you to boost your Attack while having access to a STAB Fighting type move.
Other Options:
Other than Choice Band or Choice Specs, Frogadier doesn't have many other options. It's strictly an offensive Pokemon, unless you decide to throw Toxic Spikes or Taunt on one of the sets.
